    Classy watering hole

    Verseater | Oct 10 2011

This is exactly what DiVino is - a classy watering hole. Lots of expats come here after work and stay till late. Weekend this becomes more like a club. The staff are really friendly and the snacks (bread stick with parma ham, mini sandwiches, etc) are actually really good and can fill you up easily.

    Romantic

    Verseater | Oct 3 2011

It is a bit of an oasis in the middle of Central as it is tucked away in the quiet corner between Central and Sheung Wan, with an outdoor terrace. The fountain in the piazza adds to the Italian feel. The Italian food here is simple and delicious, albeit a bit expensive. The wine list is also very good with a list of well-selected wines from all over. The inside can get quite dim but if you want privacy, opt for a private area indoor.

    Good selection

    Verseater | Sep 17 2011

The spread of food at both lunch and dinner is impressive but it is quite expensive and I cannot eat enough food in one seating to justify the price. Therefore I usually go for the afternoon tea buffet on Sundays when I can skip lunch and settle with a light supper. Not a relaxing experience though because of the noisy environment and the cramped tables.

    Improved food

    Verseater | Sep 15 2011

Pleasantly surprised by the much-improved food at 208. The bar on the ground floor is fantastic for a drink and some expensive nibbles, i.e. Iberico pork. Service is also better than before - attentive but not intrusive. Will recommend to friends who want some casual Italian food.

Did not have high expectation before dinner but was very impressed - tasty spare ribs, fresh caesar salad, moist carrot cake. Worth a trip to Sai Kung.

    Disappointed

    Verseater | Sep 10 2011

I know many people have complained about the lack of oysters on the buffet section but they can be ordered and delivered to your table. The selection of seafood is very decent so I am not complaining. What I'm upset about is the variety! Used to be better. For buffet, quality and quantity are both essential.

    Feels like a private kitchen

    Verseater | Aug 31 2011

The low ceiling is not most comfortable but it adds to the charm, along with the narrow staircase. The menu is not very big but all dishes very attractive. All these make it feel like a private kitchen, although it is not. Really fantastic starters including the deep fried yellow fish, served with real aged balsamic vinegar. The soy sauce chicken is also seriously good.

    Classic restaurant

    Verseater | Aug 12 2011

he setting and menu remind me of the Chinese restaurants in China Town all over the world. The fried pigeons can be hit and miss. Even in the same batch, some are a bit overcooked and the meat becomes very tough. So try your luck! The Pomelo Skin with Dried Shrimp Roe is also very food. The pomelo skin is soft but doesn't fall apart and the sauce is perfect with a hot bowl of steamed rice. The waiter who served our table is old enough to be my grandfather. Attentive but slow.

  • Sabatini Ristorante Italiano

    Verseater

    Mediocre food, terrible entertainment

    Verseater | Aug 8 2011

A few of us celebrated a friend's birthday tonight at Sabatini. This is an old Hong Kong favorite, which I myself used to like a few years ago. I particularly enjoyed their homemade pastas. However, some two years ago I was advised against returning as the standards had reportedly declined since the departure of the old chef. Therefore I was curious to see for myself if the food was at the same level as I remembered. When I arrived at the Royal Garden Hotel, there were posters around advertising the arrival of the new chef for Sabatini. Uh-oh... ANOTHER new chef? And the second change in about two years? That can't be good... They ran out of the poached ox tongue I initially wanted, so I started with an appetizer portion of capellini rustici con ricci di mare, bottarga di muggine cavaiale ed erba cipollina. I was surprised at the size of the dish, as the pile of pasta looked pretty filling. The taste was disappointing to say the least. While I looked forward to a symphony of flavors of the ocean - what with sea urchin, mullet roe and caviar - what I got was a mouthful of cream. I had imagined that the cream sauce would be infused with the tastes of yummy seafood, but somehow the chef chose not to do so. So this was just pasta with plain cream sauce, sprinkled with bits of seafood on top. Totally bland. Totally uninteresting. I actually struggled to pick out a second dish from the menu - none of them seemed to appeal tonight - and eventually settled on braciola di maiale Iberico con raviolo di cotechino e lenticchie, servita con patate, cipolla novella e friggitelli. How difficult is it to pan-fry a piece of pork chop? And why do so many restaurants fail in the execution? While the meat was far from dry and chewy, it just didn't deliver the yummy goodness that I expected from an Iberico pork chop. The Sous Vide Monsters will be cheering as I say this, but tonight I wished my meat had been cooked sous-vide. The lentil ravioli was totally uninteresting, but the peppers were nice. I was ready to take on another sabayon, but we had a cake for the birthday girl. The band came over to sing for us. I had been dreading this from the moment I sat down at the table. The group of entertainers had been working their way through the restaurant, and their performance was very mixed. While we all admired the vocal talents of the lady, the men were downright horrible. When they sang "Old MacDonald" at the far end of the room, I honestly wanted to get up and leave... And one of the old guys actually had "Leng Chai" written on his guitar... So, mediocre food AND bad entertainment. Not much reason for a return visit, especially when I have to trek across the harbor.

Tugged upstairs on Queen's Road East is this very lovely French creperie. My girlfriend brought me here last Friday for a delicious full crepe dinner, with savory and sweet crepes to share. The best were the banana and chocolate, which we both loved.

So I heard the chef from when it first opened has left. When I first visited, I was not impressed. So it was with no expectation that I came again last Sunday. I am happy to report that the food has improved tremendously. The selection of cold cuts, cheese, desserts is good. Free flow champagne. Great value for money.

    Excellent

    Verseater | Jul 22 2011

Great pastas, not expensive at all. The Milan-born and bred Chinese owner with Chinese restaurants in Milan decided to open shop here in Hong Kong a year or two ago, and have created very authentic Milanese fare in a rather non-descript building in CWB. Their pastas are great, especially the seafood linguini in tomato sauce, which has the beautiful sweet taste lacking in most restaurants here in HK. Excellent!

Top choice for business dinner in the area because of the quiet setting and exceptional service. The staff serving our table paid full attention throughout the meal and addressed our needs promptly, in a courteous manner, always with a smile. Makes me feel very comfortable entertaining my guests here.

    New location

    Verseater | Jul 16 2011

I frequented FINDS all the time when it was still in Central but I in fact prefer the new location. The interior is warmer and more modern than before. Many people assume there are only Scandinavian dishes on the menu. In fact, there are also other very "normal" dishes, such as pasta and steak. The Wagyu beef cheek is especially delicious. I would personally recommend the three-course dinner set which was only priced at HK$298.
