Ruth's Chris Steak House
American steakhouse
JOng | Oct 18 2010
Your typical American steakhouse. All steaks are served on a REALLY hot plate. So hot, in fact, that the meat sizzles when placed on it. You might think you cannot stomach the molten chocolate cake after a big piece of steak but prove yourself wrong, because you can, and you will.

Sumi Yakitori
Seedy but as good as it gets
JOng | Oct 18 2010
When my friend took me to Sumi for yakitori, I was skeptical. Let's just say the building looks nothing like a "dining building" in Causeway Bay. Lots of foreign ladies share the lift with you. However, it was the best yakitori dinner I have had in a long time. The seasoning was just right, and the atmosphere was dark and smoky, just like in Japan. Would be even better if there was a larger selection of beer.

Wooloomooloo Prime
The One
JOng | Oct 18 2010
Seems like Wooloomooloo is moving up - in terms of altitude, that is. The One is the second steakhouse-with-a-view attempt from the same group and it works. The view is really breathtaking, even though I have been living in this city for a long time. All the steakhouse staples, such as crab cakes, creamed spinach, are well done. I believe there are more choices of steaks here than the other branches, but then I have not been to those for a long time.
A very good option if you happen to be in this part of town.- How much did you spend?

Lawry's the Prime Rib
Meatlover
JOng | Oct 11 2010
After a bargain set lunch that exceeded my expectation at Lawry's last month, a pack of us came here for dinner last week, hoping to be surprised again.
I began with the shrimp cocktail. Quite average. I can tell the shrimps are not that fresh. The spinning salad bowl was just for show; the salad itself was ok but I like the fact that it is served ice cold.
The star of the show is the Jim Brady cut prime rib. Who doesn't like a juicy piece of steak? But even for a meatlover like myself, it was difficult to finish the entire piece of meat by myself.
For dessert, we shared the apple pie a la mode - a sweet end to the meal.
The wine list is quite decent!- How much did you spend?

JOng | Sep 16 2010
Like other venues in Soho, the set lunch here is around $100 for a 3-course meal. Good value considering the portion size. However, the quality has gone down. Gone are the good old Italian fare; it is replaced by half-hearted dishes such as pasta that is too mushy (could be perfect for locals) A pity!

Che's Cantonese Restaurant
Lunch, not dinner
JOng | Sep 16 2010
Dim sum remains their signature dishes, as shown by the packed dining room at lunch. I can understand why people like this place - clean, swift service (but no smile) and all dim sum served hot. The signature Mexican pineapple buns with pork are really out of this world. But it is a different story at dinner. Even simple dishes are over $100 and some of the specials are over $300. Be sure to ask the waiter as most of the time he would just take your order and walk away without telling you the price. Quite ordinary given the price.

Despite the sheer number of Chinese restaurants of similar standard in Hong Kong, the impressive view of our Victoria harbour is reason enough to choose this IFC mall outlet. The food is fairly standard but well executed and beautifully presented.
The attentive waiters and waitresses who are helpful and make great suggestions. Pricing reflects the location in Hong Kong's financial centre.

Probably one of the high end Korean restaurants in Hong Kong. It's promising when a lot of the diners are Korean! Decent Korean BBQ but the braised kalbi with turnip was outstanding! I had to order another bowl of rice so that I could finish the sauce!

Stylish and posh space with high ceiling, which is rare. Very nice setting for a relaxing lunch and even more appropriate for business dinner (because of the price and the fact that you can take the clients to the bar for a drink right after) The dishes are nicely presented, and that's all I'm going to say. Because of the location of Fish Bar (by the pool), and the fact that there are big fans blowing at you, i.e. no air-con, you might think you're on holiday. The newspaper table mats go very well with the menu that offers a great selection of seafood. Simple and focus - the way it should be at a seafood restaurant. When the ingredients are fresh, you don't need fancy sauces or condiments. Superb fish and chips and chargrilled garoupa.

Am bummed the Star Street location is not there anymore. The Soho branch is less cosy but more elegant. The food is nice - the best starter is the foie gras trio and foie gras terrine. Mindblowing
JOng | Sep 5 2010
The chef calls himself the demon chef. I don't know how much of a demon he is, judging by the look he's trying to pull off that's clearly for someone 20 years his junior. Having said that, he is a wicked wizard with the food! Very creative dishes take you on an intense taste journey. The presentation is equally fascinating. What is so great is that he doesn't push the molecular gastronomic experience - nothing was too gimmicky or try-hard. You can really taste the actual food underneath all the fancy layers. Superb. Would recommend to those who are looking for something outside the box. Pricey but you pay for the creativity. Lunch is apparently a bargain but have been told the portions are way too small for a grown man.

Luk Yu Tea House
Overhyped
JOng | Sep 5 2010
Luk Yu is an institution, from the cranky service (how hard is it to bring me an extra bowl?) to the old-school tea house interior, all the way to the average at best dim sum. Dinner is slightly better, or go with a regular and get what my friend calls "so good [food] she is willing to forgo breakfast and lunch the day before". I wasn't that lucky.

STEAK HOUSE winebar + grill, THE
Steakhouse
JOng | Aug 24 2010
Hands down the best steakhouse in Hong Kong. Couples rave about the nice view and the romantic vibe, but I only come here for the steaks. And the salad bar. And the flavored butter.
When you are stuffing 12 oz or more steak into your system, you need something green to balance things out. Some of my female friends claim that salad is all they need but I beg to differ. The cut of steak I order the most is the New York strip. Perfectly grilled with just the right amount of fat.
The selection of salt is more for show than taste. The mustards, on the other hand, are very interesting, although I stick to English mustard most of the time. The knives are fun and most guys would pick the bigger ones, for obvious reason.- How much did you spend?

Steik World Meats
Exotic beef
JOng | Aug 24 2010
There should always be a bar at any steakhouse so the minute I walked into Steik, I get a good vibe. The dry age fridge is impressive and promising as well.
Starter was the crab and lobster bisque and it was really good. Lots of flavours and served very hot. Just the way I like it.
Instead of ordering the ordinary rib-eye, I decided to try the Scottish Angus rib eye. It has more flavour than I imagined, and less fatty than US beef. You can actually taste the meat.
The warm chocolate fondant was a nice finish to the meal, although I was actually too full to enjoy it.
Our waiter (very helpful in a non-intrusive way) highly recommended the wagyu burger. I am coming back for that!- How much did you spend?

Hugo's
Two steak dinners in a week
JOng | Aug 22 2010
See review on Prime.
I have never been to the old Hugo's so I wouldn't compare the two. My colleagues have been saying the lobster bisque and steak tartare are as brilliant as before. Now I don't usually order steak tartare in Hong kong, but it was very good. The lobster bisque is probably one of the best I have had in steakhouses in hong Kong. The roast beef was excellent, better than Lawry's. We ordered a very expensive bottle of wine so the bill was over $1000 per person, but it was worth it.- How much did you spend?

NOBU InterContinental Hong Kong
Not bad
JOng | Aug 22 2010
I still cannot believe I got forced to go to Nobu, as I don't believe in "fake" Japanese food. Some friends from Taiwan wanted to give it a try, so I gave in. Westernised Japanese food, or Chef Matsuhisa's interpretation of Japanese food, is too sweet for my taste, and with too much sauce and ingredients that don't quite fit in, such as jalapeno. All the sashimi was fresh but there wasn't a lot of variety.
Nevertheless, dinner was great! Expensive, really expensive, but enjoyable and with a nice view.- How much did you spend?

PRIME Steakhouse | Wine Bar
Not bad!
JOng | Aug 22 2010
I like Bistecca, so when the group opened Prime at Element, I had to try it.
The menu is smaller than Bistecca, but the prices are friendlier. I started with the chicken caesar salad. To my surprise, the chicken was not grilled, but fried. Delicious! Really defeats the purpose of ordering a salad, but then I wouldn't be there if I were on a diet! My friend started with the onion soup, which was too watery and tasted like it came out of a can.
Now the beef. Unlike Bistecca, Prime does not have dry-aged beef. The prime rib-eye was juicy and tasty, whereas the t-bone, which was not on the menu, was a bit tasteless. We both thought the tenderloin side of the t-bone tasted "mushy". Not what one would expect. The side dishes were very good. We ordered the garlic mushrooms, grilled asparagus and garlic fries. All delicious.
After so much steak, we had to skip dessert. Before we left, our waiter came over and asked if everything was alright. It's a nice touch and unexpected, since service at Bistecca is not great.
Will definitely come back soon!- How much did you spend?

Haven't been here for years but someone suggested brunch at this place so decided to give it a try. It is a half buffet, half a la carte format: buffet for starters and desserts, but you choose from a set menu for the pasta and meat course. Vast range of choices for starters, which will fill you up so watch out. The pasta dishes were not as good as I remember but the rack of lamb was perfect. Too full for desserts, although the display looks tempting.

Tapas
JOng | Aug 4 2010
Not a traditional tapas joint; the tapas portion is too big, only a handful of customers get to sit at the bar, and the atmosphere is not quite right. It's too fancy and high-end. Nonetheless, we sat down and immediately ordered some sangria. Probably the best I have tasted in Hong Kong. Ordered a few tapas, including the scallop ceviche, grilled prawns and roast pork. Both the scallops and prawns were fresh and succulent. The pork was decent. One of us also ordered the crema cantalana, a Spanish version of creme brulee.
