Boathouse, The
waaaaay too expensive for the average place it is
eatme | May 30 2009
Wasn't too impressed with this place. Most restaurants in Stanley are floundering, trying to cater to the tourist palate and the increasing competition. This is another place I wouldn't bother coming to again. We were all served at different times - ok for a share-all Chinese but not for western individual dishes. The staff were easily confused and the atmosphere was dull.
-
Rainbow Seafood
bring everyone you know for a great night out
eatme | May 30 2009
This is pricey but one of the best places to go with a big gathering of family and friends. The atmosphere is great and that will distract you from the fairly long wait for food. There are lots of Rainbow restaurants on SKW side and they are all owned by the same people, so dont get confused, just plonk down on a big table with a good view and order all the seafood on the menu - dont forget to ask whats best that day.
-
India Palace
look out for the teacher discount!!
eatme | May 30 2009
Palak Koft - delicious veggie kebab. Great food in a completely none-pretentious atmosphere. There are more dishes than that and everyone else seemed more than happy with their choices. Worth finding and adding to your regular scoff-list. Very up-to-date bollywood movies playing and if you are a teacher (!) you get 10% discount!!!
-
Osteria Ristorante Italiano
Real Italian food
eatme | May 30 2009
Wonderful! Lots and lots of meat but plenty to keep the vegetarians grinning too. Holiday Inns are apparently more upmarket in Asia than they are in Europe, and this settles it. A great restaurant in a nice hotel. Tuscan food is what most people think of - bruschetta etc - and here it is done as well as any little trattoria in the Tuscan hills.
-
Mistral, The
Great antipasti and even better dessert
eatme | May 30 2009
Really delicious Italian...sorry - Sicilian food. The Cassata is a giveaway to the origins of the cuisine, and it doesn't lose this specific taste. Pasta is homemade and how is should be. It may set you back a few pennies but it is completely worth it. Save room for dessert if you can - the italians do it best
-
Sushi Express
Good if you get the pre/post-lunch discount
eatme | May 30 2009
This has great deals around lunchtime - and pretty good food. But it is a little wholesale.
-
Thai Orchids
greasy and gross
eatme | May 30 2009
Very average, greasy thai food. Nothing worth mentioning here - it has a good location and that is the only reason the suits end up going in their lunch break. there are far better options in the area. Plus the food took an age to come when I was the only person there.
-
Classified Star Street
Not bad but not worth the effort
eatme | May 30 2009
Very overpriced for what it offers. I think this a a case of style over substance - someone had an idea and made it into a restaurant. Unfortunately it wasnt a great idea. Wouldnt bother cleaning out the wallet for it.
-
Das Gute
Great bread and croissants!
eatme | May 30 2009
This is such an awesome place. An absolute saviour to bread lovers! It is cheap, always fresh with a waide selection of breads, pastries, muffins etc. I have never touched the cakes which look too brightly coloured to be real, but everything else is yum. Ladies behind the counter can be a little surly but they know what they are doing.
-
Grove Sandwiches
tiny but not bad for a quick bite
eatme | May 30 2009
Actually pretty good for a chain. They have healthy food and are always packed - but this is mainly because it is a tiny place. They run out of the best stuff very quickly so get here early. Salads, sandwiches and fruit bowls are the main choice. next to a busy road so dont expect more than a casual bite
-
Café Zambra
Good coffee - but...
eatme | May 30 2009
Pretty ok cafe fare. A nice western alternative in WanChai. Dont expect too much - my spinach had grit in it. The quiche is pretty good but they fall down on the desserts which are factory made and taste of nothing
-
Shang Palace
wont impress but will fill
eatme | May 30 2009
I liked this place. It wasn't everything a hotel restaurant is cracked up to be - but they never really are, as they are sharing resources. Food was a little bland- another one for the tourists. Not a taste of china but not a bad meal.
-
Isola Bar & Grill
Definitely going again soon
eatme | May 30 2009
Great relaxed service, not too fussy and very natural. The lunch set with a buffet starter and dessert is incredibly good value here. The appetizer buffet was extensive and I could have eaten just that. But the mains are light and superb. The dessert buffet was even better...huge and very very good. If its a lovely day, book an outside table for a view of the harbour
-
Simply Thai
hard to go wrong with thai food!
eatme | May 30 2009
Pretty average thai food but its cheap and hard to go wrong with any kind of thai food. If in doubt, go for the vegetarian option because that is always tasty and fresh. The meat might be best to avoid at times. Seafood seems to be good but again, stick to veggies and you'll have a good meal.
-
Aji Ichiban
Friendliest service and good sashimi
eatme | May 30 2009
A great little bolthole. Really decent japanese food. The cooked food isn't so good but the sushi is delicious. The tuna sashimi and inari sushi are my favourite anywhere and I think a good barometer of a sushi restaurant. The inari wasn't too sweet and the sashimi was fresh and smooth. Such friendly service too.
-
Ichiban (Closed)
cheap and tasty-la
eatme | May 30 2009
This is a cheap and tasty joint for Japanese food. A chain, but not with the kind of half-plastic rubbish you find in Genki. This is actually good food and you can pig out for less than 50 dollars. Plus the place is just a nice relaxed place to hang out.
-
Mrs Jones Restaurant and Bar (Closed)
a decent italian on your doorstep
eatme | May 30 2009
For central this is a little gem. Quality Italian food without the pretension or prices that you would expect. The staff are obviously happy to be there and want you to know it and have as good an experience as possible. The food is often trattoria style but with a few extra flourishes. But to be honest, the simpler the better. The homemade ravioli is to die for.
-
Liu Yuan Pavilion
Meat eaters go on ahead and scoff to the last
eatme | May 29 2009
Not bad Shanghainese food. Not a whole lot for vegetarians - i never have been a fan of vegetarian meat! but what came was delicious - dumplings were a little soggy though. Not the best and not the worst
-
Carrianna Chiu Chow Restaurant
a chinese experience
eatme | May 26 2009
great food in a typical chinese restaurant - round tables, always busy and a wide selection of good food. A great place to experiment with new dishes as everything is quality. As ever, watch out for the MSG levels - always zones me out for the afternoon.
-
Nha Trang Vietnamese Cuisine
a good choice for wanchai/causeway bay
eatme | May 25 2009
not as top quality as Nha Trang in central but bigger and easier to get a table. quality in both places is a bit iffy right now - as usual, demand may have gotten to their heads. I hope they continue to deliver
-
Thai Delight
not gourmet, but good food
eatme | May 25 2009
Perfect for a dash in dash out meal. Nothing blow your head off spicy - that is unless you ask for it. All the extras also on the table so beginners and Thai-lovers alike can enjoy.
-
ThreeSixty
good but im not a fan of eating standing up
eatme | May 19 2009
so long as you avoid the lunchtime crush this is a great place to get big portions of tasty food (some are disappointing but you will have to find your favourite). A good amount of choice and not too pricey. Wish they would get rid of the tall stand-up tables and put in some more proper seating
-
Cafe O (Closed)
not too shabby for a chain
eatme | May 19 2009
Pizzas here are surprisingly good - crispy and tasty. Coffee is definitely something i'll come back for and while the breakfasts are a tad expensive, they are large portions and also very good. An all-rounder with plenty of choice
-
Life Cafe Restaurant & Bar
live for life
eatme | May 19 2009
It took me 8 months to try the place, but it was worth the wait. Salads are to die for - and the cakes go off the chart. Pricey if you stay in to eat, so get takeout and knock $30 off the salad bar price. Or just empty the wallet and reserve a table upstairs for seriously good, seriously healthy food. Loads of options for people with intolerance, or those few vegans out there
-
Bookworm Café
take a book and stay all day
eatme | May 19 2009
Gone are the days of sangria and samba nights but Bookworm has stuck to what it does best - comfort vegetarian food. Salads are sublime and the lasagne is a stodgy treat. The chips are good too. Splash out on a Power shake and walk it all off over the Lamma hills - or veg out on the cushions..
-
Hutong
hutong and then some
eatme | May 19 2009
Ok, so its a bit more pricey, but with this amazing view, the spot on service and the fabulous food - in London you would pay triple the price and then some. I think this is amazing value if you want to impress. The bird cages are just plain cool!
-
Kung Tak Lam
Shanghainese impressario
eatme | May 19 2009
A vegetarian haven amongst all the meatiness of Kowloon! Traditional large tables with clean light decor. Food is inventive, delicious and all vegetarian! Horrah! Still not keen on faux meats but the 'unforgettable dishes' did as they said on the menu. Yum and cheap
-
Wang Fu
horray for the vegetarians
eatme | May 19 2009
i usually end up scowling at the menu, when all vegetables in Chinese restaurants are served with pork. Thank goodness for Wang Fu! An actual choice of vegetarian or tomato and egg dumplings, and both were seriously delicious and huge! I also had the cucumber salad with sesame sauce. This is going to be a regular bolt-hole for me!
And one lady spoke perfect english - but she isn't there all the time -
Aspasia (Closed)
Crazy parisian decadence
eatme | May 19 2009
Aspasia's food was well-cooked and beautifully presented. What really wowed me was Dada Bar and Lounge's Chocolate Sunday. The dessert buffet ($138 with tea and coffee) wasn't huge but everything was absolutely delicious and obviously pure quality. The jazz was pretty cool too. I could have stayed there all day!
-
Balalaika Russian Restaurant (Closed)
A bit of fun
eatme | May 14 2009
The -20 degrees ice box was fun for a quick vodka, while wearing a fur coat. The food was good, but very overpriced for what it was. I had delicious food but it was pretty much home-cooked stodgy fare. This is what you get in any English or Russian restaurant and for a Brit born it tasted a little too much like what I could easily do at home. The singing at the tables is only fun if you're in the mood.
-
Clipper Lounge
Very disappointed
eatme | May 14 2009
This is just a review of the chocolate afternoon tea. Strangely is was packed, because it was terribly. Everything tasted the same - the chocolate was poor quality and the savouries were the best bit. I love my chocolate especially adventurous flavours, and for the cash, this did not cut the mustard. AT ALL
-
Watermark
Try upstairs for cheaper fare
eatme | May 14 2009
Watermark is fairly good and fairly pricey too. If you are in the market for more casual dining, try upstairs at Pier 7 (not listed separately) for a 6-9 happy hour with free snacks and yummy pizzas
-
Pop Bites
Well I liked it!
eatme | May 14 2009
Sandwiches were the freshest I have had in Hong Kong and you have plenty of choice for fillings. A tad pricey but the cake portions are extremely generous. A lovely little London-style cafe and worth a visit, i'd say!
-
DOZO!
good sushi
eatme | May 14 2009
best to come when there are lots of people as the cavernous insides and dark interior are a little too hushed for a fun sushi experience. But what is served up is delicious. You can spend a little or a lot here and all of it is tasty. More people also equals more choice in a sushi resto
-
BOX Thai (Closed)
playing to a mass market
eatme | May 14 2009
the huge tables are only good if you dont like talking to the person opposite you. food is good but bland and catering to the mass palate. Would be more fun if the food was a shocker. Thai food needs a kick in hong kong and this doesnt quite do it. Good for large gatherings, but I wish they would turn down the music, its hard enough to hear the person on the next bench
-
Blue Ginger Casual Thai Cuisine (Closed)
Yet to prove itself
eatme | May 14 2009
While this newbie seems to sell out of curry fast, that is not always a good sign.
Very little for vegetarians here, bar the regualr green curry. Good choice but dubious as to how much is ever actually available. Ok for casual fast food but I wouldnt recommend for an evening out -
Assaf
takeout for cheap, stay in for more
eatme | May 14 2009
Delicious food and tiny intimate experience. For the prices the portions could be a little bigger, but this is central and there aren't many lebanese/middle eastern places around. The takeout for a friday night is especially good and should fill any 3am hungry belly. Falafel is excellent where the ripoff central salad bars fail to make an impact.
-
Armani / Bar HK (Closed)
Wallets of Mass Destruction
eatme | May 14 2009
Will be needed to drink and dine here.
Drinks are lovely and the service and atmosphere is top notch. You wouldn't want to come in for a casual drink in jeans but to entertain/impress a friend or boss it is perfect. Stay for drinks, but go elsewhere for food. -
World Peace Café
Wonderful World
eatme | May 6 2009
Constantly delicious vegan food. Well priced and hearty portions. Staff are always friendly and welcoming. Simply a lovely place to park your tummy for lunch. You are sure to leave full but feeling healthy and happy
-
Classified Sheung Wan
Too pricey for fun
eatme | May 6 2009
Good cheese, overpriced wine and snooty staff. Atmosphere could be a lot more friendly for somewhere trying to emulate a European cafe
-
Frites
next time food
eatme | Apr 21 2009
Coffee was amazing. Beer list is wonderful for a homesick European. All quite pricey but the portion sizes looked worth it.
Go when starving and in need of a good drink. -
Jojo Mess
reopened...unfortunately
eatme | Apr 21 2009
Once a gem - now a health hazard. An office work lunch was mowed down by the buffet that had us with headaches, nausea and actual sickness with the over-oily rich and possible off food. Average when eaten - far more unpleasant the second time round. Drunken manager can also be a problem.
-
Tapeo
Living la Vida Loca
eatme | Apr 21 2009
A very welcome, casual tapas choice for Hong Kong. Thoroughly recommended - the tapas is fresh and generous. The deserts are to die for. You will want to return to sample every one. Sunday is Sangria day. You eat at the bar on a stool al la true blue Spanish bars and watch your food being prepared. Book or some early if in a group - there is only one corner to the bar.
-
PHO TAI
Tasty but samey
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Again not much choice for vegetarians and a largely predictale menu, but the food is good, fairly fresh and tasty - if a bit samey.
Staff don't speak much english so if vegetarian avoid. If pescatarian point well at the miniature menu text -
Flying Pan, The
Proper food! as the lout would shout
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Simple hangover food 24/7. Need I say more?
-
el Taco Loco
stodge fest
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Convenient location but food is typical stodgey, very average mexican fare. There are better Mexican restaurants in the region. Try Elgin street for marginally more expensive, far tastier fare.
-
Chongqing Szechuan
pricey but tasty
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Could have gone spicier, although I may have been held back by vegetarianism. Lovely Sichuan food, but as with many mid-levels restaurants, horrifically overpriced for what it is and for the portion sizes
-
Va Bene
Just plain good
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Always good, wholesome Italian fare. Huge portions and do not leave without trying the chocolate mousse....you won't be disappointed. Decent prices too
-
Pumpernickel
Bread better than service
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Not terribly helpful staff, but perhaps I went on a bad day. Lovely bread and that's all there needs to be. Good portions also.
-
Prêt a Manger
Go to a proper restaurant
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Still uninspiring. Sandwiches are passable, but a crayfish salad gave me food poisoning - which certainly wasn't worth it. They sell a good selection of Kettle chips but the juices are sickly and rather gross.
-
Pacific Coffee Company
Just don
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Utterly horrible in every way. Digusting dishwater coffee, stale uninspiring food. This should really be removed from any list of 'food and beverage'. It is fast food and it is only worth going for the free internet.
-
Nha Trang Vietnamese Cuisine
Thumbs up but get a bigger menu!
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Small restaurant and always packed. Very limited menu - especially for vegetarians. Service can be slow, but food is delicious and worth the wait. The soft shell crab rolls are excellent - as is the lotus tea
-
Mix
myriad of juices
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Healthy food with a price-tag - always the way. The juices are good - hard to go wrong - and the food is passable. My advice is to go straight to a street stall for a $10 juice. That is, of course, unless you are there for the free internet ;)
-
Mak's Noodle Ltd.
Little cafe, littler bowls
eatme | Apr 9 2009
If you don't mind the fishy smell and paying HK$32 for a tiny bowl of wonton noodles, then it is worth it, as they are delicious, in their famous fish stock. Always interesting sharing a table and pigin cantonese too
-
Lumiere (Closed)
Not impressed
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Predictable palette and generally below par. Never outstanding, unlike the price.
-
Kosmo Café
Healthy Quickie
eatme | Apr 9 2009
Soy is the order of the day. No dairy in sight. Even the cakes are specialist. This is very useful for the lactose intolerant - has friendly staff, good portioned takeaway salads and is well-priced for its very central position. Enjoy the upstairs balcony, if it's not too smoggy
-
KEE Club
Members Only
eatme | Apr 9 2009
If you are splashing out (HK$600 without wine) then this is the place to try and get in. Members only, but as we had been at a function downstairs we managed it. The heafty price tag covered three courses of utterly exquisite food - less exquisite wine and the superb, although far too small dessert. It wasn't miniscule...just too tasty to have a normal portion. Meal comes with your own French host who was delightful, but should have forced me to have the white rather than the red wine.
-
Good Luck Thai Food
Not the best Thai food but never bad
eatme | Apr 8 2009
You may get elbowed in the eye on the way to this place by the other restaurant vendors in what is lovingly known as 'Rat Alley'. Make sure you bargain for 10-20% off and go with whoever offers it (and make sure the bill is correct), because they are all decent fare with long tables squashed together. A good cheap pitstop for LKF. Don't mind the occassional rat or cockroach and enjoy the tasty Thai food.
-
Dragon-i
dim sum ok la
eatme | Apr 8 2009
Lunchtime all you can eat for $150 is a great choice for vegetarians with more vege dim sum, and seafood dim sum than most cantonese restaurants. Good value if you stick to the dim sum and free tea
-
Babek (Closed)
real shame
eatme | Apr 8 2009
This restaurant has unfortunately closed. It was one of the best Indian restaurants in Hong Kong
-
Cafe O
Cafe just OK
eatme | Apr 8 2009
Not a bad place for a bite. Overpriced as most cafes are. Coffee is only average unless you double shot it. I was very surprised when I couldn't change an ingredient in a sandwich as they were premade - this was late at night and the sandwich had mayo in it. Soggy, stale sandwich is not a good sign. However the Granola bars are very hearty for $22
-
Viceroy (Closed)
Great views
eatme | Apr 8 2009
The lunchtime buffet is good here, although a tad overpriced for what it is. A Hong kong institution that may have declined slightly in food quality since its hey day. Still a good place to take friends, particularly for the view.
-
Sabah Malaysian Cuisine
Local Favourite
eatme | Apr 8 2009
Packed every lunch and evening. The Malaysian food is never below par. Roti and Gado gado are fantastic here (you may ahve to ask for prawn crackers with the gado gado). Very friendly staff. Decor is very understated, as are the prices. Which is why it has such a loyal following.
-
Caffe Habitu (Closed)
Lounge around
eatme | Apr 8 2009
A tad noisy (on the main road) for a relaxing coffee, but the good music makes up for it. Coffee is above average price here at $31 for a large latte, but it is also above average quality. Staff will leave you alone for hours in comfortable leather chairs. Food isn't great, but the chocolate shots are, and if you have chocolate who needs real food! Free WiFi is biggest bonus here
-
Tandoor Indian Restaurant
Thumbs up to everything
eatme | Apr 8 2009
Superbly tasty lunch buffet. The best Indian food I have tasted in Hong Kong. Everything was extremely fresh, with a dosa chef on site and a constant stream of small puri delicacies brought to the table. The range was fantastic, but not so much that it seemed wholesale. Deserts had a good range too with staff friendly enough to stop and explain the recipe (for their incredible rice pudding). Highly recommended.
