  • Chesa

    minestrone

    Oldie but Goodie

    minestrone | Sep 29 2010

The Chesa is definitely an oldie, but goodie all the way. It's been in that little corner of the Peninsula for ages, and it's been consistently fully booked on weekends!

It's no wonder as the food is DELICIOUS. Fondues are a no-brainer but my personal favourite is the raclette with chewy new potatoes and the stewy ox-tail. I ask for rice to go with the ox-tail, so not to let that sauce go to waste.

It's dim, dark and romantic, perfect for a not-stuffy but classy date night. Service is full marks, with Captain Siu Ping charming all guests at this top-notch restaurant.

Most importantly, the freebie melted cheese bread at the start of the meal is a sure sign that your evening is about to get much better!

  • NOBU InterContinental Hong Kong

    minestrone

    Great Desserts

    minestrone | Sep 29 2010

The vibe here at Nobu HK is slightly different to its UK counterpart, without the pulsating mad see and be seen rush. Good thing is all the signature dishes are available, so it's great if you want to indulge in the signature black cod with miso and other specialties.

I would say sushi is not the main draw here, especially given the abundance of top quality sushi joints in HK. The draw here is the innovative dishes like the tataki and westernized japanese food, a combo which works here at Nobu.

Staff are helpful and the amazing view is another big draw. Come here for lunch on the weekend and it's a big thumbs up.

Last but not least, the chocolate bento box here has a lovely surprise which I don't recall having tried in the UK. The chocolate fondant here comes with sprinkles of exploding chocolate candy on top! Beat that! If you still have room left in your stomach, do try the homemade mochi ice-cream dish here, it comes with yummy flavours, chocolate, sweet potato and chocolate. Divine!

  • Mandarin Grill + Bar

    minestrone

    Secret Breakfast Joint

    minestrone | Sep 29 2010

Everything about Mandarin Grill ooozes sophistication. A night out at MG is all about luxury with comfort.

The environment is soothing and contemporary, without being cold. Dark and luxurious, the setting is on par with the equally luxurious service here. Staff are helpful, attentive but never invasive, leaving one to a indulgent meal.

Be prepared though that sophistication here in terms of the cuisine verges on contemporary molecular cuisine. If you're not a big fan of funky modern cuisine, some of the dishes might be a bit trying if you're looking for old-fashioned French find dining. But if contemporary fine dining is your thing, then this place is perfect for you.

And for those in the know, the Mandarin Grill serves up breakfast with a big B. It's the perfect power breakfast to seal that trillion dollar deal. Be aware though other high power businessmen are lurking next table as well.

    Beers and Comfort Food

    minestrone | Sep 27 2010

I would say tucking in at Frites would be more suitable in the winter as food here is hearty and stodgey. Sausages, mashed potatoes, it's all about face-stuffing and beers here. Decent food but the draw here is definitely the HUGE selection of beers. Ambiance is brilliant, with the high ceiling space and also hidden away element.

    Juicy but salty

    minestrone | Sep 27 2010

A big fan of the original in Japan, I would say the pork here stays juicy and delectable. The set dinner portion is just right. Only complaint I would have is that with copious amounts of the tonkatsu sauce, it would say it verges a bit on the salty side. If they can balance out the sauce a bit, would prove more yummy.

  • Dan Ryan's Chicago Grill

    minestrone

    All American Experience

    minestrone | Sep 27 2010

It's not the best meal in town but a dinner out at Dan Ryan's is more about an all American dining experience. American staples like nachos, potato skins and ribs are a filling good bet. Salads are ginormous and fresh. Everything is big, loud and happy. Be prepared though to share your innermost thoughts with fellow diners if you're seated in the middle of the restaurant as seating is tight, so the booth seats are preferable if it's possible to bag one. Always packed to the nines, this place is good for a casual American face-stuffing session.

  • Gaddi's

    minestrone

    Old School Classic

    minestrone | Aug 26 2010

This is old school French dining, without any of that contemporary molecular play on food. The entire experience oozes old money and European luxury. Service is perfect, the band and singer is enchanting, and at just the right noise level. Expect to feel transported to Europe with a night out at Gaddi's.

    Excellent all the way

    minestrone | Aug 26 2010

This is definitely the top of the 5-star hotel coffee shop food chain. Service is smooth, non-intrusive and ever accommodating. The sofas by the soaring window encourages a long stay and the soothing luxurious decor helps as well. A good selection of Western and Asian food, consistently good and a big thumbs up to the Hainan chicken rice. Scones during tea are one of the best ones on offer in HK!

  • Krug Room, The

    minestrone

    An experience in itself

    minestrone | Aug 26 2010

A night out at the Krug Room is an unforgettable experience. Considering the exclusivity and entire experience, it's not that hard hitting on the wallet when compared to similar experiences in Europe. The private room, impleccable service and the chance to witness the kitchen working their magic tops all expectations. Food-wise, expect a full-on molecular experience. If molecular dining gives you the thrill, then Krug Room cuisine is sure to impress. Unexpectable visual trompe l'oeils, potatoes masked as pebbles or watermelon essence in the form of compact blush. If molecular cuisine drives you mad, but not in the good way, then this is not the type of food for you.

    Amazing!

    minestrone | Aug 26 2010

This place is amazing! Service is extremely efficient, wait staff has amazing memory, and it definitely takes skill to seat the constant line of people and to manage the never-ending stream of orders. Those hot fluffy egg sandwiches win hands down and macaroni is also out of this world. Definitely HK comfort food at its best.

    Consistently Good

    minestrone | Aug 4 2010

This is just one of those restaurants you keep coming back again and again as it's consistently good. I went there a few nights ago on a week night, and it was nice a quiet, different from the sunday buzz.

Food is still yummy, with the fries still topping the french fry charts, they are just so amazing. I had a hanger steak that night and it was cooked very well, soft and tender. Crepe Suzette was so so, a bit on the soggy side, so maybe another dessert next time.

Overall, very very nice dinner choice, service has greatly improved since it's early days, good ambiance if you're looking for a nice meal with friends on a week night, and definitely very reasonably price for this quality of food!

Great for bring out of towners

    minestrone | Aug 4 2010

I didn't have much expectations on my visit to this restaurant, as I expected it to be like any designer joint, great only for looks but lacking in substance. I was very pleasantly surprised that the entire experience was great.

The decor is definitely the big draw here, modern chinese works in this large space, and the fantastic view is another big plus.

Food is not out of this world but standards are high and overall, enjoyable. This would be a great place to bring out of towners but be warned, the wait for the lifts can be a big drag, so factor in a looooong wait.

    Macaroni to die for

    minestrone | Aug 4 2010

I am a die hard macaroni in soup fan and I must say the char siu macaroni at this place is to die for! The soup base is definitely calorie / MSG quota worthy and the char siu is in a league of it's own, soft, juicy and wonderful. Best little detail is the sesame oil bottle available on the table as a condiment, adds that extra oompf to the soup.

The clean bright design of the place and also the modern interpretation and presentation of typical cha chan ting fare (which I usually associate with dim dark old places) is a huge draw so it's no wonder it's packed like a mad house during lunch hours. Even waiting for a lift to get you up there is a chore.

To avoid getting overheated and stuffed during the mad lunch time rush, I would suggest later hours at lunch or even an early dinner at 6, and you can really enjoy a leisurely fantastic macaroni here.

    Finally! Real Crepes in HK

    minestrone | Aug 4 2010

If you're like me and am sick and tired of soggy mushy crepes in HK, then you would love this new place in Wan Chai. Love the authentic touch with the bowls for drinking apple cider (which was yum, by the way) and the crepes were made just right, very authentic.

We went as a large group and shared a variety of sweet crepes, perfect texture, and even a simple sugar and butter crepe is delicious with a big D!

Will definitely make another visit soon to try out savoury crepes!

    Hotpot without Chaos

    minestrone | Jan 18 2010

Definitely one great hotpot experience. Very spacious, ample space between tables and the high ceilings make this a leisurely hotpot experience, instead of the usual chaotic chinese hotpot experience. Remember to try the Lobster, corn and tomato soup base. Also interesting is the congee soup base.

    Looks better than it tastes

    minestrone | Dec 3 2009

Definitely great ambiance going there. The newspaper like menus, long tables and lockers at the side of the room adds a lot of charm to the place. Only problem would be that food is so-so and service can be a bit haphazard.

Sticky Toffee Pudding was mediocre, but the free biscotti that comes with coffee and tea is more calorie-worthy.

Your bill gets presented in a book, nice detail!

    minestrone | Dec 3 2009

this place is consistently good! I usually go for dinner there but tried lunch there the other day and it's perfect for those who love to graze. You can pick and choose kaiseki-like small dishes, so for greedy pigs, this place tops it.

Great variety of non-typical Japanese restaurant offerings. All time favourite is the Red Wine Reduction Japanese Hamburger Steak Patty.

The largely Japanese clientele is a sign that this is the real deal and service definitely matches the food!

    Myung Ga

    minestrone | Apr 17 2009

The redecorated Myung Ga is definitely a big thumbs up. Sleeker, more modern and less chaotic makes for a pleasant dinner experience. Trusty Korean food, can't really go wrong with the BBQ beef, and the hand cut soup noodles were highly satisfying. Decent service, not the overtly in your face kind though. most importantly, did not roll out smelling like a bbq-ed leek after dinner, so good ventilation. definitely a restaurant worth recommending.

Great for lunch if you're looking for a buzz, quiet and chilled at night. good dim sum and ambiance is the best. service can be haphazard depending on which wait staff you get. it can range from being extremely accommodating to a bit spaced out. luck of the draw. portions are smaller than usual cantonese offerings but nice and refined for those who are not bingers.

    Tiffin review

    minestrone | Apr 16 2009

My recent visit to this famous dessert buffet has been very disappointing. clearly they have been hugely affected by the economic downturn as there was an obvious lack of choices. the small tables surround the main buffet area used to be laden with cookies, chinese desserts etc are now empty. fruits have become limited to a lot less choices and the chocolate fountain with the marshmellow and jello sticks have completely disappeared. there was such a lack in choices that we had to resort to ordering savoury foods from the a la carte menu. Extremely disappointing!
