Laurence Yeung

Laurence Yeung is our first Member's Choice interviewee for the year. This passionate foodie shares his thoughts on cookbooks, favourite dishes and his last meal.

How long have you been a WOM member?

I have been a member for a couple of months.

What do you like most about WOM Guide's website?
Probably the "Ask a Chef" section. Usually I am more curious about how a chef approaches a problem than what he or she offers as a solution. The cookbooks I own are more or less in that vein as well -- full of explanation, but light on recipes.

Which dish do you always order at your favourite restaurant?

That is a tough one. My favourite dish would have to be pho (Vietnamese beef noodle soup) -- but from a restaurant in Washington, DC (Pho 75). In Hong Kong, probably a roast goose at Yung Kee -- I always eat there on my birthday. Oh yes, and the century eggs, too!

Which restaurant would you recommend for a romantic occasion or business meeting?

I really like Kee Club. Chef Bonelli is a genius, and the staff are so friendly and professional. No matter the occasion, they excel.

If tonight's dinner was your last on Earth, what would you eat?

I have thought about this at great length before: a simple meal of roast duck, roast pork, snow pea sprouts and plenty of rice with family and old friends, cooked by a guy who's been doing nothing but that his whole life. We'd be eating in a back alleyway on some too-small, cheap plastic furniture meant for children, as the smells of more street food
wafted through the air.
