I love mooncakes. I have always loved them. In fact, I used to take a small piece with me to school when I was little, so when others munched on their Oreos during recess, I would savour my mooncake. The lotus paste would stick to my teeth and I would be thirsty afterwards, but it was always satisfying.
The prevalent style in the market is traditional Guangdong mooncakes with lotus paste and egg yolks (just two is fine, as I only want the grease and would discard the yolks). Mooncakes with four yolks? Excessive but at least they taste like mooncakes.
Ice cream mooncakes might be refreshing, but tiramisu-flavoured mooncakes are just a little too fusion for my taste. Mango with chocolate chips? Banana split? Anyone remember the TV commercial in which a westerner held and ate the mooncake as if eating a hamburger? I have always wanted to try that but the idea is just absurd. Well, maybe not that absurd now that I just had a bite of Japanese yuzu-flavoured mooncake.
Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
