Before Chinese New Year, I helped LEAP Studio develop the module 'Meet the Food Critic'. LEAP Studio is an after-school learning centre that provides opportunities for children to polish their presentation and English writing skills through relevant real-life experiences. I was part of the creation of a curriculum that teaches thinking and writing through food and restaurants.
The age of the kids ranged from six to twelve, and it seemed the older they were, they more shy and self-conscious. After learning some food terms and phrases, the kids were asked to create a restaurant review based on a dinner with their parents. Listening to a 6-year-old tell you how much he loves the 'crispy and cheesy' pizzas at Pizza Express and a 12-year-old explain to you why a certain Soho joint is 'romantic' was fun and fascinating. They have inspired me to enjoy my food in a different way and take each bite with more thought in mind. Don't underestimate these kids!
