Behind the Kitchen Doors: Episode 4
15.07.2009
Back in my chef years, I got 'promoted' from chef of my own kitchen to what is called the 'opening chef' for a restaurant supergroup. The gig was to travel around the country and assist in the new openings of other branches of the group. For several months at a clip, my job was to set up the kitchen, hire the cooks, sous chefs and eventual head chefs when I left, and train them mercilessly in the pre-opening stage on how to make the dishes, the rigorous standards, how the flavours worked together, the presentation, then beat this into the heads of the generally recreational substance-experimenting service staff and then stay a month or two to make sure everything ran smoothly...

Just what the doctor ordered
Natjc | Nov 19 2009
I've been meaning to try this place since it opened. Reviews have been mixed and I finally got the chance for a late night supper last night.
A group of 8 us of stumbled in at about 10pm I guess. We were led up the stairs and asked if we would mind if we were the only ones up there. Answer, of course not.
Service was actually great as one of the girls stayed up with there all night so we had her undivided attention. I ordered the lamb stew which was delicious.... The Yorkshire pud was as expected and did not disappoint and I think every body at the table managed to clean their plates completely.
I really like the place. It's nothing fancy, but is just really good grub.- How much did you spend?
$250

Love it

I absolutely love this place. The fact that they serve yorkshire pudding with gravy instead of a breadroll rocks. When do you ever get that? The food was great-reminded me of my great fat aunt who would serve me the hearty shepard's Pie. Service was a bit slow, need to speed that up and have it with a smile.

Yorkshire puddings & gravy are good
Rose | May 6 2009
I've eaten in Yorkshire pudding several times and each time it gets better, even better now they have a liquor license!
Their roast dinners are great, the fisherman's pie is creamy and their fish and chips are HUGE!
Value for money is definately one of the plus sides of this place, and now they've got bottled beers at $20, draught in a couple of weeks at $25 and showing the formula one, I'm sure I'll be spending more time there...
even though the lunch promo is over, they were really busy today, I almost didn't get a seat!!!
Think they could do with some more staff though :).. or maybe less customers.. lol -
where is the lunch promotion???
k k k | May 5 2009
I went for promotion before, $68 per set if 3 or more people coming. The pudding was crispy and taste good with gravy! It was really good deal if you spent $68 for a WHOLE lunch set (appertizer, main course, dessert and drink) at Soho! However its gone now :(

Over-rated and poor service
Amy Dickson | Mar 9 2009
Have eaten here twice now.
The first time was a Tuesday night and the restaurant was empty, yet we still waited the best part of a hour for our food. The steak and mushroom pie was mushroom-heavy, and rather than button mushrooms which would work, it was full of very strong Chinese style mushrooms which frankly overpowered it.
Second time was a Sunday evening. Extremely slow service again, and many requests for water etc had to be repeated. They had run out of roast of the day, and roast potatoes! Roast beef was however very good, with a side of bubble & sqeak to substitute the roasties. The "spotted dick" is in fact a Stollen loaf that has been sliced and covered in watery custard. Nothing like Mum used to make...
Yorkshire Pudding also do not have a liquor license. If you want wine, there is no wine list, we were given a hoice of Shiraz or Cab Sav, which is then obtained from Stauntons down the road on your behalf.
The decor is great though, and if it all pulled together it could be a great place.
All just a bit bizarre, and definitely not a taste of home. I will not be going back.
