The most expensive burger in town?
gastronomerr | Aug 15 2011
In recent years the LKF Hotel (Wyndham St one) has added more quality restaurants to their building. They also house Lily & Bloom, Gold by Harlan Goldstein and the more recently opened Hardrock Cafe. On the 7th floor sits Opus Grill, a steakhouse which also serves up other classics (think lobster risotto and pork ribs) with their own twist. However, tonight, we were determined to attack the possibly most expensive burger in town.
"bread basket": Both types (brown and raisin walnut) were warm and soft)
"Opus Appetizer sampler" ($298): Fit for two, this sampler had (from the right) Jamón Ibérico Bruschetta, Cornflake Crusted Scallop, Prawn Cocktail and Foie Gras. The prawns were huge and really fresh - the cocktail sauce on the side had a good balanced tang.
Sadly there was only a piece of scallop between us two - they cornflake crust was crunchy and the scallops perfectly cooked underneath.
Thin crispy baguette with diced tomato and 24-month aged ham with a drizzle of sweet balsamic. Probably my second favourite item next to the scallops!
The apple grapefruit jam on the bottom was way too bitter/sour for me but the foie gras was well-executed, soft inside and a slight crisp from the pan on the outside. My foie-gras loving fried E thought the foie gras was excellent and didn't mind the jam with it either. The ring it sits in is a sauternes reduction which gave it some sweetness to counteract its potentially rich texture.
Before our main, we were given some pink grapefruit granita into cleanse our palates.....
Then came the "Monopole Burger" ($350): The burger itself: toasted olive and rosemary bread, a 9-oz patty made from rib-eye and NY Strip and melted swiss and gruyere and crisp lettuce inside. On the side are the crunchiest onion rings and potato fries I've had in a while...
We asked for medium but it was overcooked by a little. The beef was really lean indeed, perhaps a little too lean because it had a bite. However, unlike any other burger I've had, it was madly beefy in flavour and the 'minced' pieces were not like completely ground but you could see the tiny pieces of beef adhered together. We were warned by our waiter that we shouldn't expect a normal burger and we agreed.
The onion rings definitely deserve a mention - they were brown and crisp on the outside, the onion on the inside extremely tender..... loved these onion rings!!
The question then is.... was the burger worth its price tag? Sadly, no it wasn't. The elements were good quality but overall could not justify the $350 price. You can buy the Monopole patty raw for
About $400pp at dinner

The first few times I came here, the restaurant was half empty but the service was attentive, and all the dishes pretty decent. This time the restaurant is quite full but the food was ok. The Flannery rib eye was succulent and full of flavours, and the outside was nicely charred. The rest of the dishes were just ok.

Went with a group of 7 - extremely nice and knowledgable sommelier and yummy food! Loved the steak with fries, and the starters (bacon, scallop, and crab cake).
However, they don't have enough servers there so the service is a bit slow.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for dry aged beef. So when I got their marketing email for a lunch set special they're doing, I suggested to a carnivorous friend.
Ambiance- sheek LKF nothing unexpected. Contemporary furnishings.
Service- very good to excellent, they clearly practised synchronised service and were attentive without being intrusive. Some of the better service I have had in HK.
Food Quality: excellent- steak was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. Two minor quibbles; I didn't ask what the steak was served with- it came out with French Fries. I would have asked for veg but enjoyed the indulgence. The chop salad was rather more of a minced salad- pieces of small to medium brunoise- tasted fine, presentation was good but wouldn't stay on the fork.
Price- Starter, Steak, Dessert and Coffee for $488 is ok for good quality meat. I expected a little more presentation.

Good place for a nice steak at lunch

There aren't many places to get a proper steak for lunch--usually it's either the a la carte menu (expensive & too much for lunch) or you are getting inferior cuts on the cheap. The set lunch here is really high quality and you get proper appetizer portions (lobster bisque = highly recommended!). Great service and atmosphere for a business lunch.

I took my wife and 8 yr old to dinner on a Saturday night and had a surprisingly relaxed experience. The place was busy but not so insane that I felt like I was intruding with my family. Had a nice cocktail, settled into a simple one-course dinner of fine American beef, and ended with a digestif of fine scotch. Waitstaff were very understanding and even helped distract the little one, which as we know, is helpful when the adults are trying to enjoy themselves. The music wasn't quite to my taste but after a couple drinks I wasn't that fussed. Will definitely be back for an anniversary dinner.

Really nice set lunches. Couldn't help but compare OG with DP. I think the lobster bisque at DP is better, but the one here is pretty good too!

Took my boyfriend here for his birthday last week. He loves his steaks and wine and we’ve been to the big international steak chains and hotel restaurants in HK so I wanted to try something new. We started off at the bar with delicious martini’s; loved the way they’re served super cold. The place was fairly busy, but still subdued and nice for a romantic evening. For dinner, we ordered the “Brutus” salad and the 5 Elements Prawn Cocktail. The salad was good with some surprising taste combinations for a simple salad. I loved the Prawn Cocktail which had a variety of interesting flavors. For the main dish, we ordered the Flannery 12 oz Private Reserve NY Strip and the Blackmore Wagyu Striploin. My boyfriend was very happy to get a Flannery steak as he’d had one before at wine event in the US and loved it. Both our steaks were cooked perfectly, the flavors were gorgeous and the texture was divine. Even the Wagyu was quickly devoured without the usual overly rich feeling associated with Wagyu beef after the first few bites. We got a chance to talk to the chef - nice and humble guy who clearly takes great pride in his beef. For sides, we had the creamed spinach and baked mash potatoes, which were both tasty. The wine selection was huge, but luckily the sommelier gave us some great suggestions; especially impressive was the half bottle selection, all at reasonable prices. Overall, a great Birthday dinner and evening!

Steaklovers delight...

I am a caveman and I love my beef and grapes. Since moving to Hong Kong earlier this year, I’ve been searching for a great steak, and while I’ve had some good ones at La Pampa and The SteakHouse WineBar & Grill, like most of the world, Hong Kong seems to suffer from sauced-up commodity steak house syndrome. But I think I may have finally found a truly excellent steak at Opus Grill. Earlier this week I had the Flannery Private Reserve New York Strip and it was almost an out of body experience. It felt like the knife was slicing satin and each bite had a sweet beefy zing which sustained with every chew… that’s what I’m talking about! They also had a great wine selection, the “Cornflake-crusted Hokkaido Scallops” with chorizo bits was a tasty innovation, and the side dish of spinach was nice. But for me, I’m all about the beef, and this place was special. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, but could have been a bit faster with the appetizer. Looking forward to finding more steak havens like this in Hong Kong.

Took my clients here for business lunch last week. Service was great and appreciated the attention to detail – from the delicious starter bread to perfectly grilled steak, everything was thoughtful and high quality. I’m not much of a salad eater, but JB’s Chopped Salad was excellent. Blackmore Flat Iron was incredible, no need for any sauce, it tastes soooo good on its own. Wine list was massive with unique offerings and a lot better priced than big hotels. Good atmosphere for quiet business lunch, but you don’t want to rush while you’re there, make sure you have time to savor each bite.

I took my girlfriend here for dinner on Tuesday night. Started off with drinks at the bar, the bar tender was friendly and knowledgeable; Beluga Gold Martini was great and girlfriend loved the Mojito. For starters ordered Brutus Salad and Slab of House-Cured Bacon. Brutus Salad was a pleasant surprise with innovative combination of anchovies and burrata cheese, while the Bacon was mouth-watering. The steak was magic, had the Blackmore Wagyu which was perfectly grilled, had amazing tenderness and long-lasting savory sensation; also unlike a lot of Wagyu it didn’t leave a post-dining heaviness. Sommelier was helpful and recommended some good wines from the extensive wine list; was nice to see reasonable pricing on the wines! Side dishes were fine (recommend the spinach). Unfortunately no room for dessert. Ambience was good for quiet dinner, and service was friendly.

Good place for relaxed wine dinner
John Mo | Jun 18 2010
I tried this place after reading about it in some HK wine magazines--boasting a good selection of international wines, etc. It was actually one of the better (and better priced) lists I've seen around--as in...not trying to sell you Cloudy Bay at a 5x markup like most LKF restaurants(!). Good sommelier, too. Food was likewise appealing--simple, this is a steakhouse, but very high quality. This will appeal to the purists who are looking to get away from the high end hotel restaurants but still want the quality & service. Only issue was that appetizers were a bit slow to appear, otherwise solid.

One cannot refer to Opus Grill as a "steak house." It is apparent what kind of effort, time, and passion has gone into the restaurant. It can no longer even be compared to the previous restaurant, which cannot even be named. The meat is incredible, the wine list contains some of the best in the world and the ambiance is decadent but relaxed. Service leaves nothing to chance with even the smallest details taken care of from gourmet salt and butter to elegant cutlery. Highly recommended - a great new addition to Central. Forget Petrus and Caprice...this is it!
