Peter Chang
03.09.2009
Peter Chang is our Member's Choice interviewee for September. He tells us about the food he likes to eat when he wants to be reminded of earlier days and which cuisine he enjoys for its sophistication. He also lets us into his favourite place for the best sandwich in Hong Kong and what he would eat for his last supper.

In the Mood for Brunch
07.03.2011
The long awaited moment has finally arrived. Time to whip off all those heavy sweaters and boots, and finally bring out the snazzy shades again. The temperatures have finally risen to a comfortable level, and what better way to start the weekend than by having an endless lunch (more commonly called brunch) while basking in the warm sun. It seems to go hand-in-hand, don't you think?

Meet your Maker - Joël Robuchon
08.06.2011
Since his rather public retirement in 1996, the 66-year-old world famous chef has been working harder and has opened more restaurants than ever before. If retirement is doing what one loves to do, then Robuchon has found his vocation. We met the legendary master at his restaurant in Macau. With a successful global restaurant empire that other chefs can only dream of, he looked surprisingly well-rested and relaxed. Clad in his white double-breasted jacket – the black version we often see him in is the uniform for L’Atelier – black trousers and black patent dress shoes, he took time in telling WOM his jetsetter lifestyle, why he thinks the days are numbered for molecular gastronomy, and what he thinks is the next dining trend.

Sweet indulgence

Yes, we heard all about the croissants here. It's truly a fancy treat in town (and it's cheap!) While the plain/almond/chocolate croissants are famous here, they are almost always sold out at lunch hour. When that happens, and still I wanted something comforting, I go for the second thing on my favorites list. Well, it's a tie between the macarons and the Danishes.
The macarons, come in daintier portions compared to other patisseries/cake shops out here in HK, are of a better texture -- a light crispy exterior yet moist within, with the right almondy flavour within. Particularly enjoyed the lemon, the chestnut, and the raspberry flavour.
Of all the danishes I have come to like the pear danish the best. The grapefruit is often too tart while the pineapple was too moist inside (almost soggy), But the pear you can count on, aside from the pear being sweet and fanned out neatly...the pastry is crisp while the soft pear yields to the bite, with a reminder of vanilla that follows.

Mmm pastry!

This is the only place in town to get a decent pastry. I’ve never found a pain au chocolat or baguette like it in Hong Kong. Their baguettes are really reasonable priced, and the texture of the bread is exactly as it should be, furthermore they’re not stingy with the ham and cheese, hurrah! Their delicate little cakes are very indulgent, but the petit size keeps your waistline in check. Just wish there was more of an ambiance, as it's in a corner of the Landmark and not very atmospheric.

Petite sandwiches

Came here for their famous tea set. Amazing and very eye-catching pastries and sandwiches. All of which were very neatly made. I particularly liked their scones - not too dry nor moist, and served with clotted cream and a special jam (forgot which flavour it was).
The individual 'booths' allow us to have some privacy to chat anything we want to, even though passer-bys like to star at us.
Service was speedy, however, sometimes it can be quite difficult to get hold of a waiter as the area is quite spread out.

Good
Good for anything but breakfast

Came for breakfast one morning. Was hoping for the same awesome food at lunch. Diners can choose from the selection of bakery (still really good) and cooked breakfast from the kitchen in the restaurant above. The omlette was overcooked and lacked flavor. That kind of ruined the whole experience for me. Will only go for lunch and tea from now on.

OK
fantastic bakery

Pick a table outside the bakery, near Harvey Nichols. You will have to order your food at the counter first but they will bring it to you so it's not really like a canteen. It's much more airy and comfortable than the dark interior inside. All the sandwiches are good, thanks to the fantastic bread.
