We visited La'taste for dinner one night. My last visit last year proved nothing too special but I wanted to give them another go. The Assorted Pho ($49) has chicken, beef shin and raw beef - the broth was pretty hearty and was better than I had last time as I recall. It was mildly beefy, not too salty and comforting. with a little chili and lime I was good to go. The noodles were not too soft and I liked the assorted toppings. My only gripe was that there was very little protein and the rare beef was put underneath the noodles so by the time the bowl arrived it was fully cooked!
Beef brisket curry pot ($62) with a side of rice ($12) was also another comforting dish. The curry is mild, and reminds me of the Hong Kong styled curries you get in places such as Tsui Wah. The beef brisket and tendon were amazingly tender (no effort required to chew), but the rice fell short as the grains were of different size and was way too soft.
The Viet style fried cambodian noodles ($68) was easily adapted to Vegetarian for my friend (no chicken, vietnamese sausage or shrimp) but with egg and vegetables. A little on the expensive side, but he was happy with it. The first bite reminded me strongly of Maggi seasoning sauce, and although I wonder how 'authentic' this dish can be it was again pretty good.
As long as your expectations aren't of authentic Vietnamese but simply just good-tasting food, La'Taste can be great. Service could definitely improve though. None of the waitresses looked like they wanted to be there.
About $75pp for dinner.

A Taste of Vietnamese on Stanley Street
honeycaramels | Aug 21 2011
Again it's lunch time in Central. This time we feel like having some Vietnamese. Good thing we were on Stanley street already. It's a shame the Vietnamese places around our neighborhood are either already packed or just very bad...Nha Trang, for instance, is almost always packed. So this day we came to La'taste, hoping to get a taste of Vietnamese joint nearby our office.
The two of us shared between Rice with Lemongrass pork chop, the garlic butter wings, as well as soft-shell crab rice paper rolls. The Rice with lemongrass pork chop is just the same as the one from the set lunch. The Rice is steamed and a little bit too firm. The lemongrass pork chop is very tender, and I particularly liked the strong aroma of lemongrass as well as the scallion oil with deep fried shallots that dressed the rice. The Garlic butter wings are crispy and golden brown. It's one of the very good ones I've had (The other one was at Fragrant River in Causeway Bay). The Soft-shell crab rice paper rolls are quite substantial in servings. The rice paper are rehydrated to wrap lettuce leaves, rice vermicelli as well as deep fried soft shell crabs. It's a combination of chewy (wrapper), crispy (lettuce) and crunchy (soft shell crab). The combination is great indeed, especially dipped in the signature Vietnamese dipping sauce -- tangy and sweet and pungently savoury with the fish sauce!

Crowded lunch
ANMH | Aug 13 2010
La Taste is popular during lunch. If you come alone or as a party of 2 expect your table to be joined by strangers sitting opposite you. I was surprised to find that there is no one vegetarian dish on the entire menu. I wanted a Mon (colded vermecilli) and I asked if the kitchen could do me a vegetarian version or even pure noodles. The waiter said no. At the end I had to order a Chicken satay Mon (even though I do not eat chicken) from the a la carte and throw away the satays (which was a waste). Nonetheless, the vermecilli was good and refershing.

SPLENDID VALUE & QUALITY!
JAMES MAYO | May 21 2010
Certainly no air-con. nor crowd probs upon recent visits (3 times over a month, both partaking luncheon + supper): eggsellent taste thru'-out at superb prices (esp. for Central), & little noticeable MSG..
HK$ 160 / Head incld. drink + v. substantial portions - indeed almost ordering too much!
Good
Super hot, no air conditioning but the pho is ok!
pinks | Mar 24 2010
went there when this reataurant just opened for a month. honestly the pho is ok as the soup is quite tasty. it is just too hot and crowded there, i was like sweating and sweating all the way while eating the pho. it was still super hot after the manager "lowered" the tempature with the air conditioner remote just in front of us. hope it is better now, more organised and less messy after running for a few more months.
$50 for lunch
