CAN A CLASSIC BE TOO CLASSIC?

    TangCanCook | Sep 7 2010

The 31st floor entrance to this Hong Kong classic has all the trappings of a secret society meeting place, complete with its dark wood floor and an endless parade of private rooms. The centre of the restaurant has a few tables 'for their regulars' ie loyalists who probably been dining there for decades. The decoration is classic, but a tad too classic for my taste. There is this almost melancholy mood which I think suppresses the excitement of a salivating diner.

We were there on a sunny Sunday and sitting at a table that overlooks the eastern end of TST and the habor helped correct the mood. I suggest you book those tables, be it day or night.

In addition to the usual mix of dim-sum, all fresh and carefully prepared but no surprises, we also had; a sumer mellon soup (well presented but under seasoned) stuffed crab shells (tasty but slightly dry) roast salted chicken (best dish at that lunch) and kailan (quite ordinary). I am not a dessert person from what I can see they also fall short of the "wow factor". As for service, we were surrounded by keen youngsters who obviously need to be trained, admirable efforts though.

The question is : are they being "too classic"? Would it make a difference by adding a contemporary touch? Judging from the way it is set up, and a quick glance at the clientale, I doubt if it would. It almost seems like Guo Fu Lou is there for those who grew up with its splendor and its menu, this is their place for comfort food, and for comfort. I do not think 'change' will ever get into the menu.

One last point, get a map downstairs before you take the lift, if you do not want to be caught in the I-Square maze on the way out.
