Still going strong - should be on HK

    JimmyQ | Mar 4 2010

Dakota Prime opened with well-choreographed buzz 2 years ago, aspiring quite publicly to be the first Michelin starred steakhouse in HK, even boasting a HK$10 million wine cellar. I visited just after their opening and recall enjoying their steaks. Then after somehow failing to earn their stars, Dakota Prime quietly settled into a less glamorous niche and may not make it on everyone's hot list nowadays.

But if their burgers are any indication, this place hasn't compromised on quality and should be reinstated as a destination of choice.

I arrived somewhat discouraged as the place was nearly empty during prime lunch hour. Nevertheless, stylishly clad staff welcomed me with undivided courtesy, while Dakota Prime's interior still had the decorative flair of a high-end nightclub.

There was only one burger on the menu, made with kobe beef (a decadent choice of meat for a burger). For starters, I opted for an arugula salad with roasted pears and a balsamic vinegar dressing, which opened up my craving for meat quite nicely with its generous helpings of chunky bacon bits that were crispy and delicious. The burger arrived and immediately set my expectations reeling. The beef patty was huge, glistening with melted cheddar and large strips of bacon. I could just manage to pick it up without the whole thing collapsing back on my plate - ease-of-handling is an underrated feature of a good burger, and I appreciated the hassle-free presentation. The burger tasted as fabulous as it looked. If you like a well seasoned and juicy burger, which literally bursts with flavor on each bite, Dakota Prime has a surprise in store for you. I found it ironic that an exclusive steak boutique that may have suffered from its own over-ambition could find redemption in a humble burger. But is it enough to lure back the masses? My only reservations were the price (nearly 300 with salad, fries and two ice teas), and my medium rare request came back more on the medium side. Regardless, I will definitely be going back for more!

GOOD STEAKS; BETTER THAN YOU THINK

    BIG DADDY | Aug 5 2009

I been to Dakota once or twice but never really had the steak there until last week. The steaks were great and we shared a few cuts between friends. All the beef were well marinated and seasoned. Check it out.

Not bad, but not great either

Somehow I think this place was better when Chef Adam was there. Now the sandwiches at lunch are smaller but thank god the fries are still excellent.

love the non-stuffy decor, but the food is the highlight: great steaks, crisp on the outside, perfectly done on the inside. Mash is liquid gold! Also good fruits de mer seafood platter.

    Not cheap

    Princess | Jan 31 2009

Have been here for lunch a few times and although not cheap, it's always good. Not the case with dinner. One of us wanted rare and another medium for our steaks and they both came out to be the same. The staff didn't even do anything when we told them. Not very professional.

Great restaurants are due to the passion of their chefs and the quality of their food, and Dakota Prime has both. For anyone who likes beef, this the place for you. The atmosphere is unpretentious and the service thoughtful. A real winner.
