Coast Bistro & Bar

Coast Bistro & Bar

10.02.2010

After making a booking at Australian restaurant, Coast Bistro & Bar, I began to ask myself, what is Australian cuisine? As a food writer and an Australian surely this would be easy to answer, it wasn't. A quick Facebook quiz revealed comments such as "meat pies", "hamburgers with beetroot", "beer battered fish and chips", and "I didn't know we had a cuisine!". All fair-dinkum responses, but at the level of contemporary Australian cuisine, which the restaurant claims to serve, I had hoped for something more.

Behind the Kitchen Doors: Episode 27

03.03.2010

Kate McGettigan, managing director of Coast restaurant/bar, has her first memories of the food industry are of growing up in a pub in Sydney. On her last visit to Hong Kong she 'just fell in love with the place' and brought over old mate and exec chef Aaron Kearney, who showed me a bizarre but beautiful approach to food. Bizarre, in that the kitchen has more high-tech equipment than any I've seen before save maybe two: Bo, of course, and Amber. But this is a family-owned operation and for such, especially in rent-mad SoHo, it is quite a feat.

    struggling

The fact that we good get a table for 9 there on a Sat night when places like Wagyu, Oolaa and bistro Manchu were full should have been warning enough. Restuarant was perhaps 1/3 full, food average service was poor. With 9 people a bottle of wine doesn't go very far and yet we had to repeatedly ask for another bottle. Toilets were filthy. On leaving we noticed the huge wine fridge at the front door contained about 100 bottles when it looks like it could hold 1000. The bar was busy though and expect the restaurant at Coast to go the same way as the one upstairs at Pure.

now i know why this place is empty

    stephen mitchell | Nov 29 2010

We tried to book several other restuarants for a group of 9 on a Sat night, the usual suspects, Wagyu, Oolaa, Bistro Manchu etc but all full. This place wasn't and now I know why. It's just very average food with poor to average service and dirty toilets. Considering the place has empty we struggled to get water, drinks, refills etc Very telling sign is that the wine fridge which is at the front door and I reckon could hold a 1000 bottles only had about 100 in it. Sure sign this place is struggling, that said the bar was buzzing, perhaps time to ditch the average food operation as so many people are doing it soo much better just minutes away

Taste of Australia in Hong Kong

    lucy | Nov 26 2010

Since Coast opened a year ago, we have tried and tested most of the dishes on their menu and like many other ex-pats in HK, have enjoyed their hospitality on a fairly regular basis.

Coast uses the freshest produce available to make a range of dishes - from delicious pizzas and starters to tasty burgers to succulent steaks, fabulous fish, scrummy risottos, pastas and more...

The platters are fantastic to share over a nice bottle of wine. My fave would be the Ploughmans - including great crusty bread and the best ham off the bone you will find outside of Australia at Christmas time!

Monday Mussels (endless bowls of mussels in delicious sauces) and Tuesday Pie nights are also a top feed!

The service is friendly and there are many regular patrons who love the chilled out atmosphere and the smart casual dining and drinking experience.

    Don

I read Coast wanted to bring the best of Australian cooking to HK, with fresh fish flown in daily. I have lived in Sydney for 13 years so I know what good seafood is.

We were a party of 8, we ordered 2 big pizzas to share as a starter, they were OK, nothing special, base was average.

My sister had the snapper, which she said was the worse snapper she has ever had.

The bread that came with our share platter was dry and very average.

The cocktails were very weak, and nothing special.

I don't understand how it could be so bad, the location is good, the place is big, the decor is quite nice.

    Would never go again!

    Best left alone

    Freddy | Jan 2 2010

Went here to check out the scene, and was so disappointed. The Signature Kangaroo Pies came with pastry raw - such an easy dish but what a mistake.

Wines by glass were very expensive and the cheap ikea furniture was not up to the price.

Staff were pleasant but unnable to complete basic tasks like water and bread.

Disappointed - leave alone - try the Pure Soho restaurant upstairs instead if you want value
