When winemaker Ben Riggs won the trophy for Best Tempranillo at the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition, there was more than one gasp at the awards ceremony. With tempranillo traditionally positioned as Spain's signature grape variety, most had assumed the trophy would go to a Spanish producer, not for Mr Riggs 2007 Yacca Paddock of Adelaide Hills (Australia). Mr Riggs is dense, lush and powerful, but with fresh acidity and evenly textured tannins that clean and refresh the palate.
Sip a glass with the Bucatini al Amatriciana at 208 Duecento Otto and finish the bottle with their spicy Lamb Loin ‘Marinato'. The wine's deep, opaque colour, powerful nose and concentrated savoury dark fruit are a perfect consort for the lamb's pepperonato accents, fresh mint and carmelised garlic.
