Vietnamese street food hotspots to look out for this month
Date Published : 09 May 2017

Everyone who has been to Vietnam will tell you, with eyes rolling back and a small sigh, how much they "miss the street food back in Saigon". Believe me, there is a reason the whole world is going mad for this addictive, addictive street food cuisine. We're addicted as well, and for that reason, we've rummaged high and low and found the five most anticipated Vietnamese street food spots HOT this May.

Co Thanh
Let's start out with something really authentic. Remember “The Lunch Lady”, first featured in Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations Vietnam? The modest street food stall run by the noodle-master Lunch Lady has gained global recognition as an icon of Vietnamese street food. The only apprentice of the Lunch Lady, Brian Woo will be opening a new restaurant, Co Thanh, in Hong Kong in early May. Some cult-favourites to look out for include the bun bo hue, a spicy hue style beef satay noodle soup, and the bánh canh cua, a thick soup based on crab, pork, mushrooms and silky tapioca noodles. Bánh Mi Kitchen
Bánh Mi Kitchen is a newly opened deli that specialises in everything bánh mì. This street food staple has mesmerised hungry lunch-goers all over the world. Bánh Mi Kitchen (BMK) aims to introduce to Hong Kong the most authentic flavours using ingredients imported straight from Vietnam. Ryan Ching, director and co-founder of BMJ, explains that ingredients such as pate and condensed milk could not be replaced with those available in Hong Kong, so they are imported. Meanwhile the bread is baked fresh daily according to BMK’s special recipe. BMK’s original cold meats báhn mi is a great place to start (so authentic!), but don't forget to try the others-- it’s the char siu and chicken version that sells out at night. And don’t miss the coffee, which uses imported Vietnamese condensed milk. Shop 5, G/F, Prosperity Tower,, 39 Queen's Road Central, Central, 5148 8441; facebook.com/hongkongbmk

Vietnamese pop-up with Chef Khai Vu @Lily and Bloom
Lily and Bloom is hosting a 2-day pop-up on 10 and 11 May with renowned Las Vegas-based Chef Khai Vu, who’ll be cooking up a storm of Vietnamese signature dishes with a twist. And of course, street food is an inevitable theme on his menu. Expect grilled whole squid with togarashi pepper and spicy aioli sauce and chicken wings served with garlic & serrano pepper sauce or fish sauce glaze. 5/F, 33 Wyndham Street, Central, 2810 6166; lily-bloom.com

Soho Spice
Soho Spice is relaunching with a sophisticated new design and an exciting new menu steered by Chef Peter Franklin. They’ll be serving up modern renditions of the best street food in Southeast Asia. Expect chicken skewers with satay sauce from Malaysia, lemongrass grilled chicken from Vietnam, Thai red curry and Nutella filled rotis with peanut butter. Street food is supposed to be affordable, made from cheap cuts of meat or lower quality ingredients. However, Chef Franklin aims to recreate the flavours of our favourite street foods using the finest ingredients available, sourced locally and internationally. So look out for banging street food flavours applied to top-quality tender cuts of meat. 47B Elgin Street, Soho, Central, 2526 2227, diningconcepts.com

Chef Peter Franklin (former chef-owner of Chom Chom) is will open a 4-night-only dinnertime pop-up between 18 and 21 May at Test Kitchen to celebrate the opening of his new restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City. Putting an innovative spin on Vietnamese street food, Chef Franklin takes dishes to a funky innovative level. Expect our favourite banh xeo pancake to be reimagined as a taco, served with prawns, pork bean sprouts and mustard greens.
